Two weeks curated by Ron Anderson at the Stone November 1-11

I am very excited to tell you about the concerts that I have put together for the first two weeks in November at the Stone. Almost all of the musicians performing at these concerts I have worked with at some point during the last 32 years of my professional music carer. I will personally be performing on only two nights; 11/9 with The Molecules and 11/10 with PAK. I hope to see you at some of the shows. - R.A.

Al Margolis and PAS
Al Margolis, Robert L. Pepper (electronics)
Al Margolis has been an activist in the 1980s American cassette underground through his cassette label Sound of Pig Music; was co-founder of experimental music label Pogus Productions, which he continues to run. Active under the name If, Bwana since 1984, making music that has swung between fairly spontaneous studio constructions and more process-oriented composition. The PAS collective started in 1995 out of Brooklyn, NY, USA, driven by the creative talents of Robert L. Pepper working in the mediums of sound and video. PAS is a group out to create musical collages through the form of abstract sound. This is not music making with any sense of or desire for commercial viability, but sonic sculptures in the mode of pure art. PAS have released 9 full length releases and have been on several compilations throughout the years. PAS have performed 9 countries and numerous place sin the United States. Rare NYC appearance from Steve Buchanan straight from Beijing, on the way to Benin. As Louis Jordan so aptly put it: “t’aint what you do, it’s the way that you do it.”

Idiot Saint Crazy
Mr. Idiot Saint (guitar, computer)
Idiocy, sacred and craziness are the three musical fascinations of Mr. Idiot Saint from France, the protean Guitarist in Yolk and Scathodick Surfers bands, this solo project is a condensation of all his previous experiments (only guitar or banjo, midi guitar and laptop, and electronic drums and guitar simultaneously). On stage, he alternates ectro-rock moods, experimental pieces for solo guitar confirming his touch by grace. Each composition of the show tells a different story.

Victor Poison-Tete
Since the timely demise of rat at rat r in 1992, “If we would have hung around any longer, somebody was bound to notice!” Victor has rarely appeared in public. “I never know what I’m doing, until it’s happening, so why should anyone else be so privileged?”

Brilliant Coroners
John McDonough (trumpet) Ed Littman (guitar) Tom Shad (bass) Andy O'Neill (drums)
Defined as a “Thelonious Monk Cover Band”, Brilliant Coroners incorporates funk, heavy metal, techno, hard-core punk and free-form jazz (among other yet-to-be-named genres), to scrutinize Monk’s music with a schizoid’s frame of mind.

Using the rhythms and proportions of ink on rice paper to create music.

11/7 Wednesday
8 pm
Tom Swafford
Tom Swafford (violin)
I will perform a new set of pieces for solo violin pieces, some with looper. I, like so many before me, have succumbed to the looper’s promise of unlocking vast new creative potential-but always with the option to abandon the technology in frustration and return to good ol' solo acoustic.

10 pm
Maro Cappelli Acoustic Trio
Maro Cappelli (guitar) Ken Filiano (bass) Satoshi Takeishi (percussion)
Marco Cappelli Acoustic Trio explores the “chamber music” sound of Cappelli’s classical prepared guitar in combination with Ken’s powerful acoustic bass playing and Satoshi's very special set of percussion. The trio, formed back in 2009 by three of most active improvisers in the New York avant-garde music scene, gained a reputation through many appearances in New York’s venues as well through a 2011 European Tour. Their first CD, “Les Nuages en France,” has been released by Mode Records on its section AVANT.

11/9 Friday
8 pm
The Molecules
Ron Anderson (guitar) Thomas Scandura (drums) John Shiurba (bass)
A very rare appearance of 1990’s San Francisco Bay Area legends. The unpredictable, spazz-core trio the Molecules was a Bay Area underground fixture in the early ’90s. Formed in 1990 by guitarist Ron Anderson, drummer Thomas Scandura, and bassist Chris Millner, the Oakland-based band went through two more bassists, the third being John Shiurba. Their performances predated much of today’s avant-weird by a decade, with influences from prog-rock, no wave, punk and performance art. They released several albums and kept up a touring regimen that included North America, Europe, and Japan. The band’s approach to deconstructing song arrangements and experimentalism made them loved by many Japanese noise rockers and led to collaborations and tours with Otomo Yoshihide, Melt Banana, and Ruins.

10 pm
Drum Trio
Tom Scandura, Keith Abrams, Mike Pride (drums)
East meets West. Visiting west coast drummer Tom Scandura meets two of New York’s finest in a new creation just for this one night! Expect a powerful set of rhythmic wonderment and extended drum technique.

11/10 Saturday
8 pm
Jack Wright, Ron Stabinsky, John McClellan Trio
Jack Wright (alto and soprano saxes) Ron Stabinsky (piano) John McClellan (drums)
Jack Wright’s seventieth birthday! This trio is a “meeting,” as the French improvisers often do: three musicians who have not yet encountered each other in this configuration. Ron and Jack have been playing and performing over the past four years, often incorporating others, and this time a too infrequent partner of Jack’s, John McClellan. This will push the duo to careful awareness and perhaps unintended awkwardness.

10 pm
PAK
Ron Anderson (bass) Keith Abrams (drums) Tim Byrnes (trumpet, keyboard) Marco Cappelli (guitar) Nonoko Yoshida (alto Sax)
Ron Anderson’s PAK presents new music inspired by Ron’s current obsession with cycling. Recently PAK has been touring as a duet and this will be a rare opportunity to hear this powerful and complex music played by larger group of musicians.

11/11 Sunday
8 pm
Blip Vert
Will Redmond (electronics)
Composer and multi-instrumentalist Will Redmond has been an active musician throughout his life, saving BlipVert—his electronic music pseudonym—for his most extreme output. The term “Blipvert,” first used in the Max Headroom TV series, refers to an unrelenting stream of information resulting in a state of complete sensory overload. Although the music is extremely dense, BlipVert does a lot more than deliver pure shock-therapy. BlipVert compositions incorporate everything: jazz, glitch, metal, IDM, funk, R&B, and probably a few genres that haven't even been named yet bringing the music to a point where stereotypes don't apply any longer. In a live setting, BlipVert’s highly frenetic and unpredictable performances make each show an experience to remember.

10 pm
Michael Evans and Scott Robinson
Michael Evans, Scott Robinson (multiple instruments)
First time meeting of these two improvisers. Expect otherworldly sounds through unusual instrumentations.

11/13 Tuesday
8 pm
Barrsheadahl
Tim Dahl (bass, effects) Mick Barr (guitar) Kevin Shea (drums)
New York’s premier black metal-free jazz trio celebrates their debut cd release by pummeling a full set of epic power. Members of Krallice, child abuse and talibam! come together to realize their sonic vision of in your face brutality and beauty.

10 pm
Inzinzac
Alban Bailly (guitar) Dan Scofield (sax) Eii Litwin (drums)
Influenced by rock ’n’ roll, free jazz and eastern European music, this Philadelphia based band is composed of Alban Bailly guitar, Dan Scofield on soprano & tenor saxophones and Eli Litwin drums. Combining strong improvisations with densely composed music, Inzinzac has a very strong and deep sound with electric guitar drawing from an intricate knowledge of jazz, ranging from the blustery bellow of Last Exit and Naked City through more composed nods to punk and metal.

11/14 Wednesday
8 pm
MJ-12
Percy Jones (bass) Steve Moses (drums, trombone) Aubrey Smith (helden) (vocals, keyboards)
Percy Jones (Brand X, Eno) and MJ-12 is an exciting improvisational trio. They take various starting points of jazz/rock fusion, psychedelia and ambient noise and develop them in unpredictable directions. Nothing sounds the same twice.

10 pm
Daniel Carter, David Schnug, Will McEvoy, Max Goldman
Daniel Carter (alto, tenor and soprano saxes, flute, trumpet, clarinet) David Schnug (tenor and soprano saxes) Will McEvoy (bass) Max Goldman (drums)
This quartet is an improvising ensemble featuring the great improviser Daniel Carter. The focus of the group is on collective composition, offering improvisations that are focused and stand alone as complete musical statements.
